The Underground Wonder Of Budapest

The Labyrinth in Budapest has recently been named “One of the World’s 7 Underground Wonders” and it sure is a nice place to visit.
During hot summer days it brings refreshment from the heat and during the winter it brings heat and protection from the cold wind from the Danube.

The caves of Castle Hill were created as an effect of the hot water springs almost half a million years ago.
Later the small caves were connected to each other and also to the cellarage of the houses of the Castle District for economic and military purposes.
In the result, a complicated network of catacombs was created under the city giving rise to elaborated legends.
In 1935 tourists got free access to the catacombs.
During the war time the catacombs served as an asylum and a hospital and were seriously damaged.
The Labyrinth was reconstructed in 1996/1997 and it has been regiven its original look, and you almost get the feeling that you are walking around in a real labyrinth.
The Labyrinth is more than 4000 square meters, and it has different tours and trips, for example the “Personal Labyrinth”, the “Labyrinth of Love”, the “Prehistoric”,
the “Historical Labyrinths”, the “Labyrinth of an Other-World” and the “Labyrinth of Courage”.
Today the place can be visited 24 hours a day. Different exhibitions are held there. The walls are decorated with dim lamps.
Only 1200 meters are available for tourists. All the other corridors are walled up.
Noble wine is available for drinking and buying.
