Mars On Earth

"The Black Desert" in the U.S. state of Nevada is a wonderful corner of our planet where hot geysers burst into the sky and the sand is painted black. This desert is a part of the prehistoric dried lake Laontan that existed 18-7 thousand years BC, during the last glacial period. The mystical place with dry black cliffs and sparkling geysers attracts with its ethereal atmosphere.
The Black Rock Desert is a saline, closed lake in north-western Nevada. The length of the desert is 110 km with the width of 32 km. It is part of closed Great Basin.
In this desert there are numerous volcanic and geothermal formations.
This famous geyser called "Fly" is , in fact, less than a man. But thanks to a good shooting foreshortening and lighting, photographers have managed to create an image as if it was a beautiful giant constantly erupting three water streams.
Once upon a time in the geyser place there was a ranch Fly, but in 1916 when the owner of the ranch drilled a well hoping that the desert would turn into fertile wet meadows, he accidentally drilled a geothermal pocket of water. However, only in 1964, boiling water began to fly out on the the surface, creating this geothermal beauty.
Owners of the land, on which the geyser is located, were several times offered to sell it in order to allow an access for everybody but they refused. This monument is surrounded by fences and gates so tourists have to ask permission to visit these lands beforehand.
Since the 1990s the annual festival Burning Man takes place in the desert , it attracts thousands of people in deserted areas . During the festival in its territory completely money circulation and movement by cars are completely forbidden.
This place is famous for its paleological peculiarities, as well as the fact that in the XIX century there were migration ways to California here. Moreover in this place a speed of ground and missile equipments is often measured.
Minerals, seaweed and cyanobacteriae give it this incredible color.
