The Homeland of Tango: Buenos Aires

La Boca district, Buenos-Aires, Argentina. It's not only one of the colorful citiesin the world. This is where Buenos Aires starts from! It is the place where tango appeared!
La Boca is in the south-eastern outskirts of the city. The main rule for tourists coming here - watch your pockets, pickpocketers do not sleep.

The area where La Boca is situated was the very place where Pedro de Mendoza established Buenos Aires city in 1536. In the time of the Spanish colony La Boca was a zone of baracks for black-skinned slaves. The first port of Buenos Aires was in La Boca too. In the end of the XIX century near the port immigrants from Italy started to settle, they gave the modern view to the city. The migrants painted their houses various colors cause it often happened that there wasn't enough of one paint for a house. Later it became a tradition to make La Boca bright and colorful.
Usually houses were built from tin plates in La Boca.
Already in 1870 La Boca got its characteristic appearance and in 1895 it became the second big district of the capital.
On the 3rd of April, 1905 Italian immigrants formed an Italian soccer team "Boca Juniors" that now is the most popular team in Argentina. The stadium of the team is situated in La Boca, of course.
In 1882 after the labor conflict and a strike a group of Genoese immigrants decided to declare independence of La Boca from Argentina. The king of Italy was informed about it and they defined the flag of the independent republic of La Boca.
Statues of Gardel, Evita and Maradona on the balcony of Caminito.
In 1884 due to frequent fires in La Boca there was made the first in the country voluntary fire brigade.
La Boca is considered to be the homeland of tango. The most popular place connected with the dance is Caminito street immortalized in the same-named tango. Today the colorful center of La Boca is an exceptionally tourist sight. Here pictures, souvenirs, various artworks are sold.
