Halloween being the oldest holiday is still celebrated around the world with full joy and happiness. Costume parties, after parties, games, trick of treat and so many other things are done to maximize the fun and delight. People of different countries hold different believes regarding this day and some of them are really strange to hear about.
Here we have compiled a list of different countries of the world that have different and strange beliefs regarding Halloween.
Germany
In Germany, people put away their knives because they don’t want to risk hurting the returning spirits.
Ireland
Halloween originated in Ireland. Costumes bonfires, trick or treats like the normal Halloween. A game “snap – apple” is mostly played in every party. A traditional food is eaten which is called Barnbrack. The children also play different tricks on their neighbors such as “knock a dolly”.
Belgium
On this day, the black cat is considered to be bad luck and the people avoid them very much. People light candles in memory of their dead relatives and friends.
China
In china, the Halloween is known as Teng Chieh. People place food and water in front of their dead relatives and friends to pay respect.
Hong Kong
People of Hong Kong believe that spirits roam the world on the whole Halloween day. Some people burn pictures of fruit and money. They believe that this will reach the spirit world and comfort the ghosts of the dead.
Italy
Cakes are made in shape of beans which are known as Beans of the Dead.
Japan
In Japan, this festival is celebrated in the memory of the dead relatives. Food and water is placed in front of the dead relatives and friends to pay them respect.
Poland
The people of Poland believe that spirits roam on this day so they leave their doors and windows open to welcome the visiting spirits.
Portugal
People have feasts of wine and chestnuts in the cemetery. Also special sugar cakes are baked with cinnamon and herb flavoring.
Spain
People avoid crossing or getting in contact with black cats on this day because they believe that it would be bad luck. A special pastry known as the Bones of the Holy is eaten on Halloween day.
